Mako Retro Woven Wrap
It’s party time, as Ankalia retires the Mako design, and Mako Retro is going out with a bang. No wallflower, Retro’s mid-century colour palette is complemented by a dark weft, and the all-cotton, dense weave offers plenty of support. So break out the fondue and mocktails and celebrate with Mako Retro.
Made from 100% Cotton
S - Stands for Seconds Quality. We have a thread that is running the length of the wrap that is more noticeable. It’t not a skipped thread, but looks to have missed where it was supposed to be woven into the design so he is can be seen. Prices have been reflected for this.

When selecting what size wrap to purchase it is important to consider what type of carry you would like to do, as well as what size you and your baby are. In general your base size is good for a Front Wrap Cross Carry as seen in our My Wrap section. Here is some information on how to work out your base size. HERE
Please read our instructions on how to do a basic carry and safety guidelines before you start wrapping.

Our woven wraps are made from all natural fibres and, with few exceptions, are as easy to care for as your regular household laundry. Firstly, you must look over your woven before washing for the first time. We ask you to look for any weaving flaws that we may have missed along the way. If you are un-happy with your carrier then please contact us. Your woven wrap will arrive to you in what is called “loom state”. Therefore, it is very important that you wash and iron your ring sling before use. This sets the weave, removes any residue and will fluff up your wrap to make it soft and smooshy.
Wash your woven wrap first in one cold wash on a medium spin, and on gentle cycle for subsequent washing. We do not recommend the use of colour catchers with any textiles. Tumble dry on low. Ironing is strongly encouraged to prevent premature wear at the rails and other highly creased areas.
It is normal for your woven wrap to shrink in the first wash. We have taken into account shrinkage when we have cut and hemmed our wraps.

It’s the end of an era! Cue the dramatic music. I’ve loved all the Mako’s that I been lucky enough to try or own. They all wrap amazingly and you know what you’re going to get as soon and you pick one up. Oh each of them is different and Retro is a beast like Macaron, Laguna and Siren, but it’s not exactly the same.
I’ll start with the colour. I’ve never loved the darker Mako’s the way I love OG, Laguna and Conffetti but is was pleasantly surprised when I first saw Retro in real life. The orange and blue is vibrant against the black, while the maroon gives a subtle depth. True to its name it’s a funky mid century colour palette.
When I wrapped my toddler it was supportive and cushy in the same way as other heavy cotton Mako’s. There is a little less stretch then Mako Macaron and it is not as beastly, though it’s defiantly more suited to toddlers and bigger bubs and needs some serious breaking in.
The Ring Sling worked better for me with our 2 month old, but it too would be a bit overwhelming for a squish and a new wearer. The Swift though was fantastic with our little one and would make a fantastic carrier from birth till your bub out grows it.
So if your wearing big bubs and you want a sturdy rucking wrap Mako Retro is prefect. If you want a ring sling that lasts from 2 months till you stop wearing this is for you. If you’re new to babywearing and you are wearing a newborn I would probably not recommend a wrap but a swift would be prefect
Review from Jenice Sling Ring Sling and Woven Wrap
Pros: perfect amount of grip to be forgiving of a rough wrap job, thick enough to tame a toddler without being overwhelming
Cons: slight crunch factor, requires some breaking in to be suited to smaller babes.
Mako is a trusty favorite and this colour way is really something else! My initial response was ‘mmm the colours aren’t really for me’ but it grew on me while I had it here. From a small distance the wrap appears to have purple sections but up close that colour comes from the interplay of red and blue threads. What a work of art!
As for the wrap qualities, not as crisp as an unbroken Mako Siren but definitely more so than Mako Sundae or Floss. More similar to Mako Macaron or Laguna. Retro will be lovely once broken in but still very workable new. I didn’t find Retro to have a huge amount of stretch (could have been the way I wrapped).
I used the base size wrap purely for double hammocks and one or two were very average wrap jobs, however my wearee did not budge or sag (despite some epic nap protesting) and it remained comfortable for the duration of some pretty long wears. A tight chest pass takes some work! However, if it is loose like mine were it doesn’t matter at all. Retro doesn’t require precision skills.
As a ring sling I also really enjoyed Retro. Once threaded nicely Retro is pretty effortless to pull through the rings and holds really well. Its a pretty good ring sling as far as they go.
Over all, whilst the colour way is not for us it was a pleasure to test. It wouldn’t be my first choice for a squish however if you love the colour way and are prepared to break it in, it could be up to the task. Otherwise I’d reccomend Retro from 3/4 months onwards depending on the size of bub. Fantastic for toddlers and bigger babes.
